Founded by the pioneers of the Maldives Tourism Industry in 1983, Crown Company is a privately owned Maldivian company specializing in resort and resort infrastructure development, investing in resort infrastructure, and operations of resorts. Crown’s Directors are the local individuals who challenged the pronouncement of the Maldives being an unsuitable destination for tourism development by the United Nations over 30 years ago, and transformed the Maldives Tourism Industry with true spirit of entrepreneurship to what we come to see today.
Today, Crown Company owns award-winning world-class hotels including Conrad Maldives, Rangali Island, Hideaway Beach Resort and Spa and Veligandu Island Resort and Spa, operated by highly trained professionals in every aspect of the business.
The first Resort Hotel by Crown, Veligandu Island Resort and Spa, was opened in 1984, designed with some unique concepts, and is among the first resorts to have incorporated localized features such as the ‘open bathroom’ concept of the Maldives that we see in the design of resorts today.
Veligandu Island Resort and Spa was the first resort in the Maldives that had 100% air-conditioned rooms and all rooms supplied with desalinated water, during a time when resorts in the Maldives operated with brackish water. Veligandu Island Resort and Spa was first operated by a handful of staff including the four directors of the company who were actively engaged in the operation of the resort.
Among the notable accomplishments of Crown is the development of the first all-glass undersea restaurant in the world, ‘Ithaa Undersea Restaurant’ at Conrad Maldives, Rangali Island, lying 16 feet below sea level. This unique concept inspired many and has appealed to some of the top international travellers as a truly unique experience, consequently rated “the most beautiful restaurant in the world” by the New York Daily News in 2014.
